This movie opened on my father's birthday, which might have been a good time to see it but I had to work. I finally saw it and had the cinema all to myself on a Friday afternoon. It is about on par with most Christmas dysfunction movies like Christmas Vacation. Watching a few of the set-piece moments, especially where they culminate, I am flabbergasted that critics have been hostile.

What someone today might call "gay panic" or "homophobia" is actually better described as CULTURE SHOCK, a term without so much judgment. It is all part of a character arc and effectively underscores the difference in parenting styles at the heart of the movie's conflicts. Radio executive Brad Taggart attempts to be a good father to his stepchildren but his problems increase multifold when their biological parent, Dusty Mayron, suddenly comes back into their lives. You can safely disregard any review by a Mel Gibson hater.

Also, the plot is pretty formulaic and uses a lot of rather cliched tropes. Yet despite a few weaknesses, Daddy's Home 2 is an entertaining Christmas film. The former rival father-stepfather duo has become a tight parenting team, sharing the duties of raising their kids together. But the extended family dynamic will be tested when their respective dads visit for Christmas. I suspect that some critics are triggered by bits that appear in trailers for the film, like the running joke that Will Ferrell kisses his father John Lithgow as Mel makes wry commentary on it.

Those kinds of "refreshers" tend to leave out CONTEXT!!!! And also tend to omit the factor of alcoholism and bipolar disorder, two valid obstacles which I am pleased to see him overcome. Verified reviews are considered more trustworthy by fellow moviegoers. Chevy Chase and Robert De Niro were considered for the roles of the two dads.

Rotten Tomatoes guaranteed fresh the remake of Ghostbusters and this movie gets a splat? Something is rotten besides tomatoes in the state of Denmark. When it comes to raising their kids, Dusty and Brad finally have this co-parenting thing down. That is, until Dusty's macho dad and Brad's sweet-natured father come to town, throwing the whole family into complete chaos. As old rivalries create new problems, Dusty and Brad's partnership is put to the ultimate test in this hilarious and heartwarming comedy that gives new meaning to the term 'blended family'. Available in 4K UHD, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos on select platforms.

A wacky holiday family comedy, Daddy's Home 2 delivers some good laughs. Mel Gibson and John Lithgow make for great additions to the cast and prove to have good comedic chemistry with Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. And the humor mixes satire and physical comedy fairly well; though Ferrell's broad slapstick goes a little too far at times.
